This is the third video in our new series, with me Andy and Corey Aka The Server Log Kid and the question is How can I quickly spot large images on my website?

Today’s question is how can I quickly spot large images on my website?

Answer:

So, Corey, that is another brilliant question and something we have been asked here and its a very important question. Especially with mobile first indexing.

Large images obviously slow down a site, so if you can address and fix them.

Using a tool like Screaming Frog you can quickly add your data into the Free Screaming Frog reporting we give away on the website, it actually filters images by largest to smallest so you can quickly spot them.

Then all you need to do is quickly download them images, chuck them into something like comrpessjpeg.com or compresspng.com make them smaller (by compressing them) and then re-uploading them to your website.

Another tip for you – if you take the compressed image and then put that back onto compress jpeg

  • 80% of the time nothing will change
  • 10% of the time the image won’t be usable as it won’t look right
  • but 10% of the time the image will have compressed that little bit smaller and still look good – making that file size that little bit smaller and we all know speed kills and large images are a big factor in page speed load time.

This can be really helpful if you have a large site with a lot of images.

Something I didn’t cover in the video, but large images can use up quite a bit of your crawl budget as they take longer to download.
